Famous Last Words: Surviving Week 1

The biggest lesson I have learned this week is to, GET AHEAD. We were given early access to the class and I wish I had had the time to take advantage of that and get ahead in the class. While the assignments aren’t hard or too time consuming, getting ahead can help you not feel rushed or stressed later in the week when you have work for other classes.

The first week of school is one of the toughest, it is a time when you are still trying to get your routine down and get out of the “Summer mindset.” The best way that I have found to beat this lag is to try to get my assignments done early. This will allow you to take a break on the weekend, so you don’t have to feel overwhelmed. I love that this class gives you the fluidity to do your assignments as they fit into your schedule.

A main focus for this class is writing. While I have always considered myself a good writer, I do struggle with writing character dialogue. I am happy with how my story turned out but for future stories, character dialogue is one of the biggest things I need to work on. This week I started my writing process on campus and finished it at home, I think for me personally, writing at home allows me the freedom to take breaks and collect my thoughts. I often get interrupted when I am on campus, so it makes it hard to write consistently.

My goals for next week are to include more dialogue into my stories and to get my assignments done by Friday night. By doing this I will not only improve as a writer, but I will have the weekend free to go home for Labor Day.  I’m hoping that by the end of this semester I feel more confident in my writing.

This is a great reminder that no matter what life throws at you, you can handle it. Web Source : Pinterest

Tech Tip: Pinterest Board Embed and Create

For this assignment I created a Pinterest board and embedded it on my page. I think Pinterest is one of the best sites out there, because it allows you to gather ideas, inspiration and help for any project. This summer at my internship, I worked with Pinterest a lot to create boards for one of our clients. It was a great way to show off our clients products as well as reach our target audience. I think Pinterest will be very useful for this assignment because it will allow me to get inspiration for my stories and it will help me to illustrate my musings!

Helpful Tips for Starting the Semester Right!

Every semester comes with new challenges and assignments you need to do. Before you think about letting all of your homework pile up until the last minute, I have some tips and tricks to help you.

Google Calendar
For this any calendar will work, but I highly recommend the Google Calendar because it lets you color code your activities and it will also sync to all of your Apple devices. Keeping an electronic calendar is great because you can set alarms and reminders, that way you don't even have to remember to look at your calendar, it does the work for you! The key to keeping a successful calendar is to remember to update it, even the littlest activity like dinner with a friend. By writing in a calendar it will help you be efficient with your time and you will be a good friend because you didn't forget your plans.

Planner
Planners come in all shapes and sizes. While a planner does a similar job to a calendar, a planner allows you the freedom to keep track of your homework assignments in greater detail. When picking a planner it is important to pick one that you like. This will insure that you continue to use it as the semester wears on. I love Erin Condren planners because they are colorful and allow me the month and then consecutive week overviews! Whether you want color or structure, make sure to keep your planner updated with assignments and exams.

Homework Day
My last recommendation for a successful year is to plan a homework day. While you should be doing homework throughout the week, I find it helpful to dedicate a day (mine is Sunday) to review and finish any homework you didnt get done during the week. This allows you to structure your time and assignments throughout the week, while still getting a break on the weekend!

I hope these tips have helped you get organized for the school year! My last little piece of wisdom is to remember to have fun! While homework and exams can overwhelm you and stress you out, make sure to take some "me time," even if its running to Sonic and back!

Reading Options

For my week two reading I have chosen to read part A of Apuleius's Cupidand Psyche. I read this story in high school and it was one of my favorites. I am excited to read these because the go more in-depth and show more background to the story, besides who doesn’t love a love story?

In weeks 6-7, a story that caught my eye was the Monkey King. This story seems interesting to me because I have not read anything like this. I am intrigued by the use of magic and myth in this story. The story itself remind me a little of the movie the Sorceress Apprentice.

In weeks 11-12 I am so excited to read the Celtic Tales. The main aspect of these stories that caught my eye is that they involve leprechauns. I like the idea of something that movies and books have fictionalized as one way and then finding stories that transform them into something else. Like how Disney paints fairy’s as cute and harmless, while Shakespeare paints them as manipulative.

In week 13-14 I want to read the full story of the Little Mermaid. It was one of my favorite movies when I was younger, so I am excited to see how the original story goes. Within this same week I would also like to check out the Dante sections. I took a World of Dante class last semester, so it is a subject I am very interest in.

Storybook Favorites

Storybook Favorites

I really enjoyed getting to see the different assignments that past students have done. It’s given me a lot of inspiration for what I might want to do for my final project!

The first storybook that really caught my eye was the Fairy Tale World  by Kendra Norman. I love everything Disney and especially Disney princesses, so this story first caught my eye because of the title. After reading through the introduction and some of the stories, I really enjoyed how she split each princess into their own story,  It was interesting to see more about them while still tying in to the whole storybook. The design of the book was pink and was perfect for the theme of the story.

The next storyboard I found interesting was Dead Men Tell NoTales. I am a big fan of pirate stories (which, is what I thought this was) but when I got the actual story I found that it was a collection of horror stories. After reading through a few of them I really like what the author did by making each story about a specific historical horror story characters. It was a really fun read. The only think I found a little off putting was the layout of the storybook. The design, while it fit the stories, wasn’t my favorite and the layout made it hard to navigate the page.
-didn’t like the design

The last storybook I really enjoyed was As Told By Tink:Stories of Neverland. I really liked this story because it was a different take on the classic Peter Pan story. When you first get to the page, there is a map layout of Neverland. I thought that this was a great picture to not only set the scene but to help the reader understand where everything is happening. This also went into how they organized their story by location. Overall I really enjoyed the story and loved the layout.

Introduction to an Eclectic Soul

Hi Guys! As you can see from my blog my name is Katie Nichols! I am a senior, public relations major within the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. This year has been really exciting so far because this is the first year of my 4 + 1 accelerated masters degree (I say exciting, but what I really mean is scared out of my mind.) When I finish my masters my dream job is to work in the movie industry. I have always loved reading and watching movies, so it seemed like the perfect career for me to go into (fingers crossed I can make it happen!)

This summer was fun because I was an intern at RD Thomas Advertising in Lubbock Texas. For an in-depth look at my personality and what my internship was all about you can see my intern spotlight. This semester I am rounding out my second semester with Lindsey and Asp, which is Gaylord’s student-run advertising and PR agency. This is my favorite program that Gaylord offers, because it offers hands-on experience and because it is run by a great group of students!

Beyond that the main thing to know about me is I am obsessed with Harry Potter. I have them practically memorized and can quote them as I type this on my Harry Potter decal covered computer and sip from my Hogwarts Coffee glass. My love of the Harry Potter series when I was younger led me to a life-long love of reading. I love books in any form I can get and when I am driving home to Lubbock, Texas, where I’m from, I listen to my audible account. My favorite books are fiction, while I love a true story, there is something magical about entering a world that’s entirely made up.

I hope this has given you a look into who I am! I’m an open book (see my pun?), so ask me anything you want! I am an eclectic soul and my favorite things in life are good friends and family.  I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the movie and book, We Bought a Zoo. I hope it gives you the courage to step outside of your comfort zone!!

Story-Bleu the Magical Thinker

It was destined that a child would save the Village. Monstrous livestock had plagued the Village and every night the harmless sheep and cows would turn into something viscous. These creatures prowled the woods that surrounded the Village and would prey on the village people. When Bleu was born his parents new he was special. When he was ten years old he found an old shepherds horn in his fathers cabinet. When he blew the horn something amazing happened, a sound as loud as a yell and a strong wind came from the horn. When his father heard this he knew his son was the one who was destined to save the Village.

From that night on, armed with his horn Bleu would go out and sit on the hay, when the monstrous animals would get too close to the city he would blow his horn and with the powerful sound would push the animals away from the city, scaring them back into the shadows of the wood.

Bleu did this for many years. At first he was excited to have the honor of protecting the city, to be the chosen one. But as he grew up, Bleu no longer wanted this job.  He pleaded with his dad to let one of his other brother’s take over, but his dad refused.

“Please father, I want to experience the world outside of this Village. I have done this for twelve years. Haven’t I done enough?,” Bleu pleaded. But with one look at his father he knew it was no use.

“Stop whining boy, you should be honored that you were chosen for this life. This was destined for you.”

Bleu tried one more time to reason with his father, “Shouldn’t I get a say in how I live my life?”

Expecting anger from his father he was surprised to see resignation. “ I’m truly sorry son, but we are in no position to question or challenge fate. The best we can do is to make the best out of what we have been dealt.”  With a strong pat on his shoulder, Bleu watched his father walk out of the door.

Bleu knew that he needed to take his future into his own hands.  He knew the animals only changed at night, so he needed to find a new way to protect the Village while they were sleeping. The following nights, he tried several different ideas. He locked the animals in pastures, but they still managed to get out. Next he tried to distract the animals with piles of food in the jungle, yet they still came back to the village.  He knew he was running out of ideas, so he began to think. There had to be a reason the animals didn’t change during the day.

That night he surrounded the small village with torches. He thought that if he could keep the light going, even during the night, that the animals wouldn’t change. What he saw surprised him, armed with his horn; he saw that the animals didn’t change. He tested this out for the next two weeks and got the same results. When he approached his father and asked him to come see what he had discovered, his father was amazed.

“Looks like you were destined to save the Village, one way or another. “ He father exclaimed with a heavy pat on the back.

From that night on Bleu realized that he has more to offer than just what destiny had decided. Bleu was finally able to be a normal boy.

Bibliography: This story is bases on the nursery rhyme "Little Boy Blue" in The Nursery Rhyme Book, edited by Andrew Lang.

Author’s Note: I really enjoyed getting to read different nursery rhymes. When I read the story about Little Boy Blue I immediately thought that there had to be something special to a little boy who herds the sheep and cows. I was also struck with the idea about what comes after the fairytale ending or the happily ever after. I knew that Little Boy Bleu would one day grow up and I wanted to see who he would become. I hold the firm belief that everyone has something special about them, whether it is something they are born with or something they discover. Bleu in my story might have been destined to be one thing, but he was took control and became who he wanted to be!
