Hi Guys! As you can see from my blog my name is Katie
Nichols! I am a senior, public relations major within the Gaylord College of
Journalism and Mass Communication. This year has been really exciting so far
because this is the first year of my 4 + 1 accelerated masters degree (I say
exciting, but what I really mean is scared out of my mind.) When I finish my
masters my dream job is to work in the movie industry. I have always loved
reading and watching movies, so it seemed like the perfect career for me to go
into (fingers crossed I can make it happen!)
This summer was fun because I was an intern at RD Thomas
Advertising in Lubbock Texas. For an in-depth look at my personality and what
my internship was all about you can see my intern spotlight. This semester I am rounding out my second semester with Lindsey
and Asp, which is Gaylord’s student-run advertising and PR agency. This is my
favorite program that Gaylord offers, because it offers hands-on experience and
because it is run by a great group of students!
Beyond that the main thing to know about me is I am obsessed
with Harry Potter. I have them practically memorized and can quote them as I
type this on my Harry Potter decal covered computer and sip from my Hogwarts
Coffee glass. My love of the Harry Potter series when I was younger led me to a
life-long love of reading. I love books in any form I can get and when I am
driving home to Lubbock, Texas, where I’m from, I listen to my audible account.
My favorite books are fiction, while I love a true story, there is something magical
about entering a world that’s entirely made up.
I hope this has given you a look into who I am! I’m an open
book (see my pun?), so ask me anything you want! I am an eclectic soul and my favorite things in life are good friends and family. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the movie and
book, We Bought a Zoo. I hope it gives you the courage to step outside of your comfort zone!!
Hi Katie!
ReplyDeleteI'm really interested in what you said here, because we're quite similar. I'm also a PR major, I'm a junior now but I am hoping to apply and get into the 4 + 1 program at Gaylord as well. Another thing is that I also love movies and worked at a movie theater for 3 years, and I loved it! It made me want to open my own movie theater. I changed my mind on that, but I still would like to do something like that. I never really knew how PR could fit into the movie industry (that's within my reach) since I doubt I could be a big time PR professional for a movie company or an actor. If you have any ideas let me know! I look forward to reading your posts this semester.
Katie,
ReplyDeleteI'm in Lindsey + Asp too; although this is just my first semester in it, I'm really loving it so far. I love meeting other book worms. What are some other books you have read recently that you would recommend? It sounds like your internship was really insightful and gave you good experience (always good to boost up that resume). What specifically do you want to do in the movie industry once you graduate? Congrats on your senior year and masters program!
How great that you are doing one of those accelerated masters programs, Katie: fantastic! That is one of the "new-fangled" things you are seeing at more and more schools now, and I am really glad they have options like that here at OU. And I hope you can find ways to use that Harry Potter energy here for the class: you are going to be re-working old stories and re-cycling old myths and legends in much the same way that Rowling did. And of course Hogwarts is available as a setting for stories too, with Harry Potter as a kind of "style" you can use for your stories, finding the old myths and legends you like best and way to somehow connect to the Hogwarts world. I hope you have fun with it, and I look forward to seeing what stories will grab your attention and inspire you this semester! :-)
ReplyDeleteKatie,
ReplyDeleteMy little sister also has aspirations of working in the film/entertainment industry, it takes a lot of work. I also loved reading Harry Potter as a kid, I remember how happy I was to get each new book. That, and A Series of Unfortunate Events were my favorites. Thanks for sharing, good luck with graduating and finding your dream job.
Andrew
First off, I completely love your post title, plus the background design for your blog. I’m a senior PW major at Gaylord, and my dream goal is to go into the TV industry, so it sounds like we’d get along pretty well, haha. Fingers definitely crossed for you with the movie business!
ReplyDeleteAlso, yes--Harry Potter. I’m just really grateful to have grown up during the time of the HP Generation, and the range of characters and depth of world-building in the series kills me to think about, but in the best way. I haven’t tried audiobooks much, but I’ll definitely have to give them a chance. Nice to meet you!
Hey Katie, it is nice to meet you. I think it is super neat that you are aspiring to be in the movie industry, because I think it is one that is dynamic and ever changing. I also think it is cool that you like audiobooks. I was really into them about five years ago, but actually lately I have become more of a fan of podcasts. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your masters program.
ReplyDeleteHi Katie! I'm a PR senior, too. I think that's so cool that you want to be in the movie industry. That sounds so glamorous, but I know it will be a lot of work yet really rewarding. Best of luck! I hope that works out for you. I've read a few Harry Potter books and really liked them, but going to Harry Potter world at Universal Studios was an absolute blast! If you have never been, I highly encourage it. The butter beer was delicious and it was really endearing seeing how everyone there is so invested in the series.
ReplyDeleteHi Katie! That is amazing that you want to go into the movie business. I think that would be so fun! Plus, everyone loves movies! Also, Harry Potter is the best ever and I am so glad you love it. Did you watch Harry Potter weekend two weeks ago? (Maybe three…) It gets me it the fall mood, even if its 90 degrees out! And yes I also agree with Holly, you definitely need to go to Harry Potter world!
ReplyDeleteThe movie industry! Do you want to produce or do you want to be the person making the advertisements for the movies? Either way it would be cool! I too have fond memories of Harry Potter, when I was younger, my mother would read them to me before I went to bed, but she eventually stopped because I would always read ahead. Have you been to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal? It is amazing and I highly recommend it!
ReplyDeleteHi Katie! So nice to meet you!
ReplyDeleteMuch like you, I am a PR Major in Gaylord! I'm surprised we have never run into one another before! Also funny story, my middle name is Nichole (spelled with an H) because before my grandfather was adopted, his last name was Nichols. I wonder if we are related somewhere down the line.
Can't wait to read your work!
Hi Katie! First off I love the background of your blog...it is very peaceful and calming. I think it is awesome that you are a part of Lindsey + Asp. My roommate is apart of it as well and she is working on stuff for it all the time. I am also a huge Harry Potter fan. When I was little, my brother would read them to me and ever since then I have loved it...my friends always make fun of me, but they don't know what they're missing out on. I think its so cool that you want to go into the movie industry. I love to read, but I am not very creative so I think that is really impressive. I look forward to reading more of your blog!
ReplyDeleteHello Katie, it is nice to meet you! It sounds like you picked a degree that will allow you to work in an industry that you are passionate about. Waking up to a job that you love will be rewarding. Before returning to college I worked in several different industries and each experience left me thinking, I can do this for now but I need to know there is an end in sight. I knew I wanted to find something I was passionate about. I love to watch movies as well. The Harry Potter series is very interesting. I think I own all the movies and know most of the words by heart. I love your blog setup and I'm looking forward to reading some of your writing.
ReplyDeleteHi Katie, yay another person with an Accelerated Masters! I really like the idea, but I have to say that the fifth year is really going to take a lot out of me. I'm just ready to graduate already!!
ReplyDeleteOMG, I'm the same about Harry Potter. My mom used to take me to Wal Mart or Barnes and Noble at midnight so I could get the new book the SECOND it came out. Then I would stay up until like 8 reading it. My copy of the Sorcerer's Stone is so beat up that a grouping of about 10 pages is missing because the spine of the book has basically disintegrated.
Hi Katie! I had no idea you were in this class either until I saw your comments on my posts!! That is too funny. I think that is so cool that you want to work in the movie industry – that would be so fun! I absolutely love Harry Potter (I was watching the Deathly Hallows Part 2 last night). Anyways, I hope you are doing well and I am excited to read more of your posts!

ReplyDeleteWow! The accelerated program is tough, and you are on your way to complete it. Through your introduction, I can see your passion in what you study and what you plan for your career. Like you, I enjoy reading fiction books too, especially the sci-fi and fantasy genres. I wish you a lot of fun time this semester and upcoming year. Love the quote you chose!
Hi Katie, I can not imagine how difficult it is being in an accelerated masters program. Anyone can tell that you are really dedicated and passionate about school and your major. I also love Harry Potter! I have all the books and the movies. I haven't read the Cursed Child but I am super excited for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was nice to meet you!
ReplyDeleteHey Katie!
ReplyDeleteIt's a pleasure to meet another Gaylord student, another PR student, especially one in the 4+1 accelerated program. I currently intern with High Five Media Group in Edmond, OK so i was curious to see what you focused on and did in your internship spotlight link, but the link did not work on my end. Looking forward to reading your work
Hehe good pun. Hello! Well, the semester is almost over. I sure hope that you’re no longer scared out of your mind about the accelerated masters program! Also, Harry Potter is soooo good. My sister and I just went to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them… I assume you’ve already seen it? It’s not J. K. Rowling, but hey, it’s still magic.
