Famous Last Words: For the Last Time

This is officially my last post for Mythology and Folklore blog. For the first part of this post I want to look back on my the class this semester. I must admit when I first started this class I was intimidated by the amount of work we had to complete each week. But after some serious time-management skills and a awesome planner I was able to organize my schedule and make a habit out of this class. I think that was one of the hardest things I learned, once you understand that this is like a physical class and you need to schedule the work as if you were going to class it makes it much easier to arrange your time.

I think my writing has improve this semester. While I have always considered myself a good writer this class taught me a lot about writing creatively. I found out that I need to practice brevity in my writing and work on getting to the point of the story faster. I really liked that we had a word count to base our stories on! It pushed me as a writer and as a student!

Overall, I really enjoyed this class! I think that while it can be seen as daunting, when you reach the end its such a sweet thing to see what all you have done and the different stories you have created. I am taking the other MLLL class next semester, so I will be using the skills I learned in this class and applying it to that one! I am excited for the new challenge.

As I finish this post I get closer and closer to dead week. I am excited to be done with my classes and papers and to go back to Lubbock for the winter. We are all so close to finishing the year! We can do this!!

Famous Last Words: A Rough Week

This week was very difficult for me. I got back into Norman late on Sunday and ran out of time to do my first reading for this class. I am very excited that we are able to make up points; it helps to put things in perspective.

This week, much like the last few weeks, I completed my writing at my desk. Sitting at my desk helps me to stay focused without the temptation of watching TV or getting on my phone. I have learned, especially through this class, that with the weeks being so unpredictable the best thing to do is try to get work done early! This is something that has helped me in the past and will definitely help me in this class!

I read some great stories this week. I like seeing the different styles my classmates choose, because it helps me get inspiration as well as grow as a writer. One thing I struggle with is creating dialogue my characters. I know what I want them to say, but I have a hard time putting it to words. Seeing how other writers do it helps me learn different ways and methods on how to incorporate it into my own writing.

One style that I have been seeing in my classmate’s stories is the method of creating a story within a story. I really enjoy this style and I might try to incorporate it into one of my future stories. One of the biggest challenges I see with using a style like this is making sure you don’t loose track of the original story.  I don’t trouble reaching the minimum word count, but I do have trouble going over the word count. For next weeks story I really want to find a way to make my story shorter and more effective. With length sometimes come unnecessary details.

These are all the things I want to work on this week, however the most important thing I need to do is work ahead! I know this coming weekend is going to be hectic, so I think this will help me in the long-run! Have a great week guys and keep working!!

Famous Last Words: Surviving Week 1

The biggest lesson I have learned this week is to, GET AHEAD. We were given early access to the class and I wish I had had the time to take advantage of that and get ahead in the class. While the assignments aren’t hard or too time consuming, getting ahead can help you not feel rushed or stressed later in the week when you have work for other classes.

The first week of school is one of the toughest, it is a time when you are still trying to get your routine down and get out of the “Summer mindset.” The best way that I have found to beat this lag is to try to get my assignments done early. This will allow you to take a break on the weekend, so you don’t have to feel overwhelmed. I love that this class gives you the fluidity to do your assignments as they fit into your schedule.

A main focus for this class is writing. While I have always considered myself a good writer, I do struggle with writing character dialogue. I am happy with how my story turned out but for future stories, character dialogue is one of the biggest things I need to work on. This week I started my writing process on campus and finished it at home, I think for me personally, writing at home allows me the freedom to take breaks and collect my thoughts. I often get interrupted when I am on campus, so it makes it hard to write consistently.

My goals for next week are to include more dialogue into my stories and to get my assignments done by Friday night. By doing this I will not only improve as a writer, but I will have the weekend free to go home for Labor Day.  I’m hoping that by the end of this semester I feel more confident in my writing.

This is a great reminder that no matter what life throws at you, you can handle it. Web Source : Pinterest
